Class compliant drivers are convenient because you don't have to download any external software. But often manufacturer specific drivers provide added functionality. Let's use Yamaha has an example. Because data transfer on USb is much faster than 5 pin DIN it is possible to have multiple ports of MIDI (a port is a group of 16 MIDI channels) on a single USB cable. The dedicated Yamaha USB Driver provides for 8 ports of high speed USB, includes the names of all the devices that are compatible with the driver and has some routing capabilities. These features are only available if you download the driver from Yamaha's website. Also many audio interfaces are also MIDI interfaces and audio and MIDI travel over the USb cable. So if you purchase a MIDI or Audio interface you should always check the product manual and manufacturer's website to see if there is a dedicated USB driver for your product that provides added functionality. Often even if the manufacturer specific driver is available when connected to a device which don't allow driver downloads into the operating system (for example iOS devices), the product will still work as a class compliant USB device.
You can connect a USB or MIDI music keyboard to your computer to play and record software instruments.
Connect a music keyboard to your computer
Do one of the following:
- Connect the USB cable from the keyboard to your computer.
- Connect the MIDI Out port to a MIDI In port on a MIDI interface, and connect the MIDI In port on the keyboard to a MIDI Out port on the MIDI interface using MIDI cables. Connect the MIDI interface to your computer.
Be sure to follow the instructions that came with the keyboard, which may include installing the correct driver on your computer. Check the manufacturer’s website for the latest driver software. If you’re using a MIDI interface, be sure to follow the instructions that came with the interface.
You can set the keyboard sensitivity to control how the keyboard responds to your playing. For more information, see Play software instruments.

Hi everyone,
I'm buying the P115 tomorrow and have some questions regarding MIDI playback and recording.
Connect Yamaha Keyboard To Pc
Here's a picture of the back panel of the P105. The P115 should be identical.
If I understand correctly, normally, the MIDI IN line on a digital piano or keyboard would accept MIDI data and play midi files on a computer. I know the USB TO HOST substitutes the MIDI OUT, but does it work as the MIDI IN as well? In other words, can I connect my computer to the piano, then record what I play on the piano as MIDI files, then later play back those files through the piano?
Thanks in advance!
